What is patient advocacy?

Patient advocacy is a specialty within the healthcare system that is concerned with advocating on the patient's behalf.  This includes, but is not limited to, support and education of the patient as well as guidance in decision-making regarding various aspects of one's care.

What role does a patient advocate fulfill?

A patient or healthcare advocate may support the patient before, during, or after doctors’ appointments.  They can take notes during hospital visits, assist with filing health insurance claims, and can help patients gain a more in-depth understanding regarding their specific health conditions and medications.

Oftentimes, patients must rely on themselves to navigate the healthcare system or may task family members with the role of patient advocate.  However, in recent years the availability of professional patient advocates with medical backgrounds and associated certifications has been on the rise.
